Blog Ring of Power: Year in Review with Darke Conteur


YIR3As 2012 comes to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on some of the joys and triumphs of the year. To that end, we bring you the 2012 Blog Ring of Power Year in Review! We’ve teamed up with this past years’ BRoP interviewees to bring you eleven days worth of “year in review” guest posts and ten fabulous giveaway prizes! Me(Sept11)Wow, the end of the year already. Can you believe it? In just a few weeks, a new year will be upon us. While I'm excited about what the future holds, I have to admit, I'm pretty fond of 2012. So much has happened this year writing-wise that I think I'll mark this year as the turning point in my career.

My first erotic short story went live in January 2012. Wouldn't you know it; the first piece of writing I make money on is porn. I'd like to expand my collection of published shorts from just science fiction and dark fantasy, and I have several more shorts lined up; one horror, a short paranormal piece and a few more erotic. Well, that's the plan. We'll see.

My paranormal series is doing well. With the release of my second book UNDER THE COVER OF WICCA in January and OF COVENS AND PACKS in June, I'm doing better than I expected. Don't get me wrong, self-publishing is a hard business especially when it comes to sales. I'll be honest; I didn't see any real numbers until April of this year. In the end, I'll be happy when I can pay for the cost of putting one out, without having to use a credit card. My husband will be too.

The books I outlined for the rest of the series will be (I'm hoping) just as exciting with as many twist to the plot as the first three. TALES OF THE DEMON (book four), OMENS AND PORTENDS (book five) and the first of two side novels for the series– THE SAINTS OF BELVEDERE ROAD, are slated to come out next year. No, I'm not crazy trying to get three out in one year. SAINTS has been written for several years and I'm already into the revision stage for TALES.  

Besides more books in my paranormal series, I'm working on two other novels; a paranormal romance and a paranormal Steampunk, both with erotic elements, and in the true style of me, they're the first books in yet two new series. I'm going to be different with these and try to have them published through Indie. If that fails, at least I have the knowledge to put them out myself.

Retreating from the Writer's Retreat

As I have learned, When Words Count Writer's Retreat has a sweepstakes at the end of every year to generate free visits for writers from the beginning of January all the way to the end of May. I was one of those people who won. Coming to the retreat, I was blessed with stunning views of mountain ranges and winding back roads, a covered bridge and farms. All of this pleasant to look at. Arriving was just as beautiful. From the mountains in the distance to the little pond just beyond the house it gave a promise of peace and possible productivity in writing. My room is the top left corner. Hi room, I'm home for the next few days. I admit, when I had first won, I thought it was a scam, and in doing research I have not been the only one to think so. It's not a normal thing to hear about some random retreat in Vermont and also to win a 3 night stay at a country type house in the shadow of the Green Mountains in said retreat. It is real, however, I can attest to it.

The Bar

Pepe Don had owned a bar when he was young. Mike and his sister decided, now that they were adults, they would finally open the door and see what was left of it. He unlocked the door and the dust hit him. Coughing, he walked in. Becky kept her arm over her mouth as she followed. "Look at all those bottles!" Mike ran his hand on the wood of the counter, picking up a layer of dust. Each bottle had a label and a tag on it. "It is a bar after all." Becky shrugged and headed over to the piano. She plunked her finger on a few keys, the sound was pitch perfect. "This still works." Mike looked at the tags on the mostly full bottles. His jaw dropped. "I don't think this was a bar, Bek." "Look at this place, of course it was a bar." She played a few more notes, the music ringing out in wonderous tones. With each tune, the dust seemed to shake off the bottles. "This isn't a bar. So I was tagged in another Meme, by Dean C Rich and Cherie, which is great cause they're fun. :) And this one is called Lucky 7s. My lucky number. Sounds good so here it goes. Lucky 7!   This one is quite easy, so without any delay, here are the rules: 1. Go to page 77 of your current ms. 2. Go to line 7. 3.
