Sara V. Zook Cover Reveal: A Magic Within

Hey everyone! Welcome to the Realm. I can't say how much I'm excited about Sara V. Zook and her new book A Magic Within! Words fail me, so I'm just going to Kermit flail while you guys check out this awesome author.

About the Author:

Sara V. Zook is a paranormal/fantasy writer. She is the author of the Strange in Skin Trilogy, Clipped and Evanescent, Book 1 in The Sempiternal Series. She lives in Pennsylvania with her 3 small children and husband.

Excerpt from A Magic Within:

“What is that sound?” I asked in a whisper.  It was still far away but growing louder and closer by the minute.

Lydic put his arm behind his back and opened his hand for me to take it.  I slid my fingers into his and waited for him to let me know what to do next.  My heart was pounding out of my chest.  Another second passed and then Lydic turned, his eyes locked on mine as he nodded his head.  We took off to try to outrun whatever it was that was coming for us.  We had only gotten two steps in before I felt Lydic’s grasp on my hand slip away.  I turned around to see what was happening.  I screamed out in horror as Lydic was frozen in place.  He was still on his feet, but his head was drawn back and his eyes rolling into his head as if in extreme pain.

            “Lydic!” I cried out.

The old woman was behind him.  She had that stick, the same one I had tripped over, held up in the air and aimed at Lydic’s head.  There were bright colors, green and yellow, pouring out from the end of the stick and going directly into his skull.  The woman’s expression was one of determination.  Her eyes were closed and her lips pressed together as she mumbled something I couldn’t understand.

What are you going to do?  Panic seized me.  Lydic was supposed to help me, not the other way around.  I didn’t know what to do.  I had to stop this, but how?

The high-pitched whistling grew louder and more intense.  It was starting to hurt my ears.  My gut told me that if I didn’t make a move now, it was going to be too late.

I took a step toward the stick and reached out and grabbed it with my hand.  I used all the strength I had to yank it from the grasp of the old woman.  Lydic fell to his knees.  The woman glared at me, a low growl escaping from her throat.  She lunged toward me.  Without having time to think, I instinctively swung the large stick at her, using it as a bat and she was the ball.  It collided with her head making a grotesque sound.  She collapsed to the ground.  Lydic looked up at me.  I was breathing hard, trying to understand what had just happened.

“What do we do?” I asked.  The whistling noise was almost to us, but I still couldn’t see anything.

Lydic glanced over his shoulder at the woman.  “Run!”

About the Book:

Title:  A Magic Within
Author:  Sara V. Zook
To Be Published:  June 18th, 2014
Genre:  YA Paranormal

Normalcy. I need to get back to a state of normalcy. What’s happened to me? Why am I here in this orphanage, and why am I forbidden to leave? Everyone is so very cruel here. I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. It’s the paranoia getting to me. It’s like someone’s always watching, always listening. There’s a general fear around here, and for some reason, it seems fueled by my arrival, but why are they afraid of me? I didn’t ask for this. I don’t even know how I got here. I need to go home. My parents must be worried sick. There has to be someone here who can help me, who can give me answers and lead me in the right direction so I can get out of here. There is this one boy, Lydic. Could he be my key to getting out? I can see it in his eyes he feels sorry for me. He seems to know more than he’s letting on. These people aren’t like anyone I’ve ever met before.

Blog Ring of Power Presents: Ripley Patton

Welcome to this week’s Blog Ring of Power guest, Ripley Patton, who lives in Portland, Oregon, with one cat, two teenagers, and a man who wants to live on a boat.
She is an award-winning short story writer and author of The PSS Chronicles, a young adult paranormal thriller series. The first book in the series, GHOST HAND, was a semi-finalist for The Kindle Book Review 2013 Best Indie Book Awards and a Cybil Award Nominee. The second book in the series, GHOST HOLD, was released in September 2013.
The third book in the series, GHOST HEART, will be released Summer 2014 and can currently be PRE-ORDERED through the GHOST HEART KICKSTARTER PROJECT (MAY 2014 only, so don’t delay).
    Part 2: Terri
    Part 3: T.W.
    Part 4: E.M.
PART 4: About your Currant Work

BRoP: Tell us about your new book and when it is out? Where can people purchase it?

RP: I am currently preparing to publish the third book in The PSS Chronicles Series, GHOST HEART. Right now, for a limited time, you can pre-order it through my GHOST HEART KICKSTARTER Project. And, if you're new to the series, you can get all the books there in both paperback and e-book format. The first book of the series, GHOST HAND, is also FREE right now on Kindle and Kobo and only 99 cents on B&N. The second book, GHOST HOLD, is available in paperback and e-book at most book retailers as well. And if you're local to Portland, Oregon, I sell in several local bookstores too.

BRoP: Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject?

RP: One unusual thing about my books is that they were all funded through Kickstarter, a crowdfunding website. I use Kickstarter to make my books available for pre-order, and I use that money to create a better product by hiring professional cover designers, editors and formatters.

Another thing that makes the series unique is the paranormal element. I don't use the typical tropes of the paranormal genre. I've never read a YA series featuring a girl with a ghost hand who can pickpocket people's souls. Well, now I have, but I had to write it first.
BRoP: What was the hardest part of writing this book?

RP: This book was actually the easiest to write so far, so that's good. It means I'm getting better at what I do. Probably the hardest part of writing this book, though, was changing from single first-person point-of-view (which I wrote in the first two books) to multiple POVs in this book. In books one and two, I really got used to being inside Olivia Black's head. In this third book, I got to explore the heads of two other character, and it was both fun and challenging.

BRoP: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in this book?

RP: No, once I've written a book and released it to the world, I have no regrets. There is no such thing as a perfect book. It just doesn't exist. I think a writer should look forward to new work, not back at past stories. And I think we should always appreciate the stories that shaped us, especially our own. Our younger selves were just as valid storytellers as our older, wiser selves are now.
BRoP: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

RP: Messages are for sermons. Fiction shows you the truth by telling you lies. I never try to tell anything but a good story, and I let the story do the rest.

GHOST HAND: Seventeen-year-old Olivia Black has a rare birth defect known as Psyche Sans Soma, or PSS. Instead of a right hand made of flesh and blood, she was born with a hand made of ethereal energy.
How does Olivia handle being the girl with the ghost hand? Well, she’s a little bit morbid and a whole lot snarky.
Her mother thinks her obsession with death, black clothing, and the local cemetery is a bid for attention. But when Marcus, the new guy in Olivia’s calculus class, stares at her like she’s a freak, Olivia doesn’t like it. And when her hand goes rogue, doing things she never imagined possible, Olivia finds herself running for her life with Marcus from a group of men bent on taking the power of her hand for their own nefarious purposes.
GHOST HOLD: Olivia Black is back.
Only this time she’s not the one in need of rescue.
Samantha James, rich, popular, and an award-winning composer at age seventeen, is the next target on the CAMFers’ list. In order to convince Samantha to come with them, Olivia and Passion must pose as cousins, blend into the most affluent high school in Indianapolis, and infiltrate a mysterious cult known as The Hold.
Olivia doesn’t expect it to be easy, even with the PSS guys backing them up. But what she discovers over the course of the mission will call into question everything she ever believed about herself, her family, and especially about Marcus, the guy she is undoubtedly falling in love with.

GHOST HEART:  In the aftermath of a brutal tragedy, Jason and Passion are on the run. Marcus is lost beyond reach, and The Hold is in shambles. If that weren't enough, Olivia Black has been taken by the CAMFers to be used as Dr. Fineman's personal lab rat in his merciless quest to uncover the mysteries of Psyche Sans Soma once and for all. But only if he can break her.
They are scattered. They are devastated. They are ruined.
Their only hope is Olivia's stubborn determination to thwart her captors and unlock the secrets of her ghost hand before Dr. Fineman can. Will she finally find the strength within herself to embrace the full power of her PSS.
And will it even matter if Marcus has already betrayed her?

Blog Ring of Power Presents: C.J. Pinard

C.J. is a west coast native who has lived on both coasts and now lives near the middle, in Colorado! Coming from a family of writers and editors, she feels writing is in her blood and hopes people will lose themselves for a little while in the fantasy and fun of her stories. She also loves sweet red wine, the SF 49ers, and unlike most authors, doesn't have any cats. When she's not writing, she can be found chasing around her kids or working at her day job, which she totally feels interferes with life, but it also sometimes gives her inspiration for her books, since reality usually is way more interesting than fiction.

Don't forget the other four parts of this interview.

Part 1 @ You are here!

BRoP: How long have you been writing?

CJ:About a year and a half, since my first book came out.

BRoP: When and why did you begin writing?

CJ: Summer of 2012 I had an idea for a book, but I ignored it. I was editing for a few authors at the time (copyediting, mostly) and didn’t think I had time, but you know how characters can be. They will ping around in your brain until you let them out! It was supposed to be one book. Four books and a novella later…

BRoP: Tell us about your early works—what was the first thing you ever wrote?

CJ: I loved writing stories and essays in school, but I can’t tell you exactly what. Just whatever my childish imagination decided to produce. It helped me escape math. Haha!

BRoP: When did you first consider yourself a professional writer?

CJ: This is tough for me because I still don’t, really. One day when writing is my sole source of income, maybe I might!

BRoP: What genre do you write?

CJ: I do mostly paranormal/urban fantasy, but I’m about to write my third New Adult romance book.

BRoP: If you couldn’t be an author, what would your ideal career be?

    CJ: An FBI Agent

When 21-year-old Nolan Bishop meets a seductive woman named Eva at a dark club in downtown Shreveport, Louisiana, little does he know his soul will be gone as soon as she is. Realizing she’s taken something from him, he finds out he has a very limited time to destroy her before he turns into something sinister and inhuman. In a race against all that is holy, Nolan has to find Eva and get his soul back while trying not to fall in love with Charity, the twin sister of the succubus who took his soul – all in seven days.
